The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, is renowned for its collection of art by three generations of the Wyeth family. The patriarch of that famous clan and one of America's foremost illustrators and painters is Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth (1822-1945), whose work is the subject of this catalogue raisonn of paintings. N.C. Wyeth moved to the Brandywine Valley in 1902 and within a decade established himself among America's prominent illustrators. Many of his most famous illustrations were for classic novels published by Scribner's, including Treasure Island and The Last of the Mohicans, and his works are familiar to generations of Americans. Wyeth also painted fine landscapes, still lifes and portraits in a fascinating variety of styles and techniques. Compiled by curator Christine B. Podmaniczky, and featuring nearly 2,000 illustrated works, this two-volume set is an invaluable contribution to scholarship and a stunning chronicle of the artist's remarkable achievement.
