Munich's Alte Pinakothek houses a rich collection of paintings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Founded by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria in the sixteenth century, the collection is now housed in a neo-classical building built under the auspices of King Ludwig I. Works from all schools are represented in this book, by thematic sections prefaced by an introductory historical text. Highlights include Dürer's The Four Apostles and the Paumgaetner Altar, and the largest Rubens collection in the world - The Honeysuckle Bower, Helene Fourment in her Wedding Dress and the Last Judgement are illustrated here. Raphael, Botticelli, Titian, Fragonard and El Greco all feature, and detailed captions accompany each painting.
