DESCRIPTION

Sir Victor Sassoon (1880–1961) left a remarkable legacy when he created a trust to preserve his collection of ivories for the benefit of UK citizens. Dedicated trustees have since grown the collection with a number of significant acquisitions, and this catalogue is a celebration of it as it stands today.

This catalogue contains a selection of what the authors consider to be the most engaging and important pieces. Dating from the Shang dynasty to the twentieth century, here are over 350 exquisitely carved ivories, including ornaments, sewing boxes and vases; scholars’ brush pots, wrist wrests and table screens; and figurines portraying deities and immortals associated with Buddhism and Daoism.

Four introductory essays explore the acquisition of the ivories,  placing them in their historical and cultural context. This magnificent and beautifully illustrated book is a testament to the technical skills of the craftsmen who produced these wonderful objects.
